MY LIFE IN COMMUNICATIONS

The biggest communications challenge I have faced in my current (or previous) role was…
I remember a project recently that required setting up multiple interviews with senior level executives (all very busy people, of course) and then writing profiles of them, eliciting their comments on the drafts, incorporating their comments into the drafts, getting their approval on the drafts—and ending up with pieces that made everyone happy. It’s a good feeling to get to the end of a project like that and be able to look at the finished work and feel proud of what you’ve accomplished.

My favorite communications memory is…

When a client told me “You made me sound so good.” A ghostwriting client told me, “You made it sound like me.”

The most important communications or professional lesson I’ve learned is…

What you think you said is not always what the other person heard; it never hurts to double (or triple) check.

A book, conference, or resource that I really find useful and recommend to other communicators is…

Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap… and Others Don’t by Jim Collins. It was surprising to find out what the great companies all had in common (passion, yes—but also humility). And that “Good is the enemy of great.”

You should also know this about me:

I like working as a member of a team and working by myself. What I most enjoy, and probably what I’m best at, is talking with people about their work and their lives and writing about what I heard them say. I try to learn something new every day.

OH, HOW FAR I’VE COME… (i.e. Career/Resume Highlights)
