IABCLA met virtually for a fast-paced midday chat during its monthly Communications Lab on March 23. Grant Skakun, IABCLA director of newsletters and a freelance copy editor at Eucrest Writing, led a conversation about clear and effective writing with fellow board members, IABCLA members, and communications professionals.
The group discussed foundational topics and concepts in business writing:
- Analyzing your audience before writing: the more you know about your potential readers, the more user-centered your message will be and the more likely you’ll be to achieve your purpose.
- Achieving your purpose for writing: thankfully, there are a lot of writing techniques out there that we can use to achieve our purposes for writing.
- Structuring messages: structures are the order and progression of your ideas.
- Improving writing performance: writing is a difficult skill, and there is always an opportunity to improve.
